In BREAKFAST FIRST – NO CAP, Gregory Evans captures everyday ritual as social architecture.
Two long-term earthbound representatives of the mystery world – usually more closely connected to mystical sources than to mundane ones – give themselves Sunday off, which conveniently falls on village market day. While the women are in church (obligated, if they want the family name represented in the heavenly realm), these male-types of the species stand in the village square with baguette, wine, and quicktalk, while waiting for their third bearing the coveted dried sausage.
With talk that follows of a most esoteric nature: creation, existence, and their ongoing favorite topic, the human concept called death, which they refer to as reformation – knowing t’s a time-independent thing – they will not be seen at home until afetr the dark hours.
The composition suggests casual exchange – food, conversation, shared comfort with comrades. Beneath it lies pattern, routine, rhythm.
The scene is not exceptional. It happens all over the world, all the time. Its routine is its significance.
When routine receives full attention, it becomes ritual. Sacred ritual.
This work fits within Urban Ritual Myth, where ordinary acts become frameworks for deeper meaning.
BREAKFAST FIRST – NO CAP is a small detail taken from a painting done in acrylics on canvas.
